Is Edinburgh Worth Visiting?

Entrance to Edinburgh Castle

This is an easy question to answer: Absolutely, YES! Edinburgh is a magical city that offers a blend of history, culture, and plenty of outdoor activities—perfect for travelers of all ages, especially families with kids. Whether you’re wandering through medieval streets or hiking up a volcanic hill, there’s something captivating for everyone. Here’s an overview of some of the best things to do in Edinburgh with kids and tips for a smooth family trip.

Things to Do in Edinburgh with Kids

1. Edinburgh Castle

No visit to Edinburgh is complete without exploring the iconic Edinburgh Castle. Situated on Castle Rock, this historic fortress overlooks the city, offering breathtaking views. Kids will love the dramatic history, including stories of battles, knights, and royalty. Be sure to check out the Crown Jewels, the Stone of Destiny, and the impressive cannons.

2. Victoria Street

If you're a Harry Potter fan, Victoria Street is a must-visit! This colorful, curved street is said to be the inspiration for Diagon Alley. The vibrant shopfronts, quirky stores, and cobblestone charm will ignite any kid's imagination, making them feel like they’ve stepped into a wizarding world. You can even pop into some themed shops for souvenirs—wands, robes, or perhaps a chocolate frog!

3. Edinburgh Old Town

Stroll through the narrow, winding streets of Edinburgh's Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Kids will be fascinated by the medieval architecture, hidden closes (alleys), and historical landmarks. A visit to the *Real Mary King’s Close* offers an underground tour of the city’s hidden streets, where children will learn about Edinburgh’s past in a fun, slightly spooky way.

3. Arthur’s Seat

For families who enjoy a bit of adventure, hiking up Arthur's Seat, an extinct volcano, is a fantastic way to see panoramic views of the city and beyond. It’s an accessible hike, even with kids, though you’ll want sturdy shoes and water for the climb. The reward at the top is a full, sweeping view of Edinburgh's skyline, perfect for family photos or a relaxing picnic.

4. Pentland Hills Regional Park

Get a taste of the Scotland countryside while visiting this regional park just a short taxi ride outside of the city. This park has nine peaks and offers views of Edinburgh and the surrounding areas. It is super peaceful and not very crowded. Take a taxi to Bonaly County park (which is inside Pentland Hills) and walk to the Bonaly Reservoir). Great views to be had!

Traveling Tips

When traveling with kids in Edinburgh, there are a few important things to keep in mind:

  • Dining Restrictions: Many pubs in Edinburgh have restrictions on allowing children under 16 inside after 8 p.m. This means families should plan to have dinner earlier in the evening or opt for restaurants or quick-service spots that don’t have these age limits. You’ll find plenty of kid-friendly options throughout the city, from casual eateries to international cuisine.

  • Public Transport: Edinburgh is well connected by buses, and it’s quite walkable. If your kids get tired, consider hopping on one of the city’s hop-on-hop-off sightseeing buses, which are convenient for families and give a great overview of the city. Strollers are welcome on most buses and trains.

Traveling from Edinburgh, Scotland to London by Train

One of the highlights of our trip was the scenic train journey from Edinburgh to London. We took a direct 4.5-hour train ride with LNER, departing from Edinburgh's Waverley Station. The station was easy to access, just a short taxi ride from our VRBO. We arrived about 90 minutes early to grab breakfast and make sure we had time to find the right platform.

Why is the train ride a must-do?

  • Family-friendly seats: We booked a set of seats around a table, which made the ride more comfortable. This allowed the kids to spread out, play card games, and have snacks, making the time fly by.

  • Scenic views: The journey is truly breathtaking! As you travel, the landscape shifts constantly. You'll ride through the rolling hills of Scotland and charming villages in England, each different from the one before.

  • Arriving in London: The train arrives at London’s King’s Cross Station, and from here, it’s easy to find another train, hail a taxi, or walk to your next destination.

Taking the train is not only a convenient way to travel with kids but also a relaxing experience where you can take in the natural beauty of the UK without the stress of airports or highways.
