Every visit to northern Michigan allows us to connect as a family in ways that feel natural and meaningful, surrounded by breathtaking scenery. What makes it even more incredible is how each trip reminds us of the hidden gem that Michigan truly is—its beauty surprises us every time. 1. New Buffalo

Nestled along the Lake Michigan shoreline, New Buffalo is a hidden gem for those seeking a blend of relaxation and fun. With sandy beaches perfect for sunbathing and a vibrant marina, this town is ideal for families looking for things to do with kids in Michigan. Rent kayaks, explore the local shops, or indulge in fresh seafood at waterfront eateries.

Just a short drive away, we spent three nights at Warren Dunes State Park over Labor Day weekend. The kids were in awe exploring the massive dunes behind the campground—a natural playground that fired up their imaginations. If a relaxing beach day is more your style, the park’s sandy shores bring a touch of Florida without the familiar humidity and red tides!

2. Saugatuck

Saugatuck’s artistic flair and stunning lake views make it one of the best Michigan lake towns to visit. Home to quaint galleries and boutique shopping, Saugatuck’s charm appeals to both adults and kids. Don't miss a dune ride for an adventurous take on the surrounding landscape. The nearby Oval Beach, consistently ranked as one of the top beaches in the country, is perfect for an afternoon of swimming and picnicking.

We loved strolling through this charming town with the kids—grabbing ice cream, playing on the playground, and watching the sailboats glide by on a perfect summer evening. The atmosphere was one of my favorites in Michigan. Plus, with its close proximity to many Midwestern states, it’s an ideal summer getaway.

3. Holland

A family trip here isn't complete without a stop at the Windmill Island Gardens, where kids can learn about the history of the region while adults enjoy the scenic views. For those planning to stay overnight, camping around the Holland area provides an affordable way to experience Michigan's beautiful outdoors. There are also tons of VRBO’s in the area to choose from!

We spent the 4th of July in Holland, and the celebration was unforgettable. Fireworks lit up the sky over Lake Macatawa from Kollen Park, adding magic to an evening filled with food trucks and a fantastic playground for the kids. Holland’s vibrant restaurant scene, unique shopping, and nearby attractions make it an ideal town to visit anytime. A Michigan road trip would not be complete without a stop in Holland!

4. Muskegon

Muskegon is a paradise for families who enjoy water-based activities. From boating and fishing to exploring Muskegon State Park, there are plenty of options to keep everyone entertained. The nearby amusement park, Michigan's Adventure, is a must-visit for a day packed with rides and attractions that kids will love. It’s one of the top spots for family vacations in Michigan.

We camped at Muskegon State Park, and it was absolutely breathtaking. With the area being less crowded, we often had the beach all to ourselves—miles of stunning sandy shores and dunes stretching into the horizon. The campground, surrounded by trees, was the perfect spot for quality family time. We’ll definitely be back!

5. Traverse City

Traverse City, Michigan, is synonymous with family fun. Famous for its cherries, this town blends vibrant festivals, stunning beaches, and rich local culture, making it a top choice for Michigan family vacations. Traverse City offers the perfect mix of outdoor adventure and the comforts of great amenities and entertainment. Whether you’re hiking the scenic trails or playing a round of putt-putt golf, there’s something for everyone in the family.

Plus, a visit isn’t complete without exploring the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore for breathtaking views and kid-friendly hikes. With endless activities, fantastic restaurants, and fun around every corner, Traverse City is a must-visit for families. The weather is usually just right, and even the cool lake water doesn’t bother the kids—they’re too busy having the time of their lives.

For families who love camping and hiking, Wilderness State Park is a must-visit on your Michigan road trip. Located near the northern tip of the Lower Peninsula, this park features over 10,000 acres of forest, dunes, and shoreline. Traverse City, Michigan camping enthusiasts will find that Wilderness State Park offers some of the most scenic spots for pitching a tent or parking an RV, with trails perfect for kids and adults alike.

Wilderness State Park, Michigan is hands-down our favorite. We've visited several times and will keep coming back. The beaches are stunning, with soft, white sand and sunsets that are nothing short of magical. The kids are in their element here. Sometimes, it feels like we've left the U.S. entirely—especially when the sun and fog blend over the water in a way that’s almost otherworldly. With hiking and camping, it’s the perfect spot for our family. Plus, we love that Mackinac Island is just a day trip away, offering a fun day of biking that the kids always enjoy.

Mackinac Island is a magical experience for families. Accessible only by ferry, this car-free island offers horse-drawn carriage rides, bike rentals, and historic sites like Fort Mackinac. The fudge shops are a hit with kids and adults alike, making Mackinac Island a standout for Michigan family vacations. Exploring the island on foot or by bike gives you a full appreciation of its unique charm.

We’re not the biggest fans of Mackinaw City, but Mackinac Island? That’s a whole different story! It’s a favorite for our kids, especially renting bikes to explore the island, with stops for fudge and visits to playgrounds and parks. The ferry ride over is an adventure in itself and kicks off a day packed with fun. It’s the kind of day that leaves everyone with big smiles and memories to match.

11. Munising

Munising, located on the shores of Lake Superior in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, is best known as the gateway to the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Families can take a boat tour to see the stunning cliffs and waterfalls or go for a hike on one of the many trails suited for all ages. The town also has camping spots perfect for those looking to immerse themselves in Michigan’s natural beauty.

Munising may be a small town, but its cliffs and scenery are on par with places you'd expect to see in California or Australia. It’s home to some of the most breathtaking natural views we’ve ever experienced. The crystal-clear water had the kids captivated as they searched for and collected colorful rocks. We hiked to a waterfall and even took a sunset shipwreck tour that was unforgettable. We’ll definitely be back to this incredible spot in Michigan—it’s a must-visit for anyone who loves nature and adventure.

12. Bay City

Bay City is the only town we've explored on Michigan’s east coast, and it’s perfect for rounding out a road trip with a stop before heading home. The city’s Riverwalk and downtown area provide numerous options for dining, shopping, and strolling with the family. Visit the Bay City State Park for a day of swimming and picnicking or take a boat tour to explore the Saginaw Bay.

The shallow water extends far out, making it ideal for younger kids to safely play and explore without the big waves. It’s a spot that offers relaxation and fun for the whole family, and we’re glad we made the stop!
