Top 5: Weekend Getaway Packing List

There’s something truly magical about stepping away from the chaos of daily life (work, car pools, sporting events) even if just for a weekend. Whether it’s a quick escape with friends, a family adventure, or a romantic retreat with your significant other, a weekend getaway can work wonders for your mental health (we suggest once a quarter to really help with the mental health!). And of course our minimum requirement for any weekend away is getting outdoors! Breathing in the fresh air, hiking in the woods, sitting on a porch looking over the mountains or a lake is really the best way to unwind.

But let’s be real: no matter how short the trip, packing can be a challenge. Three nights might seem like an easy trip to pack for, yet somehow, we always end up overpacking or forgetting something essential. After many trips, we've perfected the art of packing for a weekend getaway.

Here are our top five tips for packing the perfect weekend bag, ensuring you have everything you need without the unnecessary bulk.

  1. Ask these key questions to determine basics you need to pack:

The first step in packing smart is to ask yourself some basic questions like where you are going, what you will be doing and what is the weather. Answers to these types of questions will quickly dictate what to pack! Let’s get started: 

What Activities will we be doing? 

Hiking Essentials: water bottle, boots & family

  • Hiking: If your weekend includes hiking (we sure hope it does), prioritize comfort and functionality. Sturdy hiking boots and moisture-wicking socks protect your feet and keep them dry (and hopefully prevents those painful blisters). Layering is essential; think breathable base layers, insulating mid-layers, and a waterproof outer layer to adapt to changing weather conditions. One of our favorite local spots to getaway to and hike is Hocking Hills, OH. 

  • Swimming: Heading to a beach or a lake? Pack two swimsuits to ensure you always have a dry one ready. A rash guard is excellent for added sun protection. Consider quick-drying fabrics for your cover-ups. If you're hiking and swimming, a quick-dry fabric shirt/button-down can be a great swim coverup too. 

  • Adventurous Activities: Activities like zip-lining, horseback riding, or kayaking require specific attire. Tennis shoes and water-proof shoes are great options to be considered. Comfortable athletic wear is of course a must! (basically what we normally live in all weekend anyways). 

  • Relaxing and Lounging: If your weekend is more about relaxation, reading a book, soaking in the hottub the key is to pack comfy clothes. Think cozy sweaters, leggings, and casual tees. A lightweight blanket or shawl can add extra comfort during chilly evenings.

What will the Weather Be? 

Understanding the weather at your destination helps you pack appropriately:

  • Cold Weather: Bring layers that you can add or remove as needed. Thermal underwear, fleece jackets, and insulated coats are essential. Don’t forget accessories like hats, scarves, and gloves to keep warm.

  • Hot Weather: Opt for light, breathable fabrics such as cotton or linen. Pack shorts, tank tops, sundresses, and breathable footwear like sandals or sneakers. A wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses are crucial for sun protection.

  • Rainy Weather:  A good rain jacket or waterproof shell is indispensable. Quick-drying clothing options will keep you comfortable if you get caught in the rain. Waterproof shoes or boots can also be a lifesaver

  • Changing Weather: Many people forget that even if they’re heading to a hot climate, venturing to a high-elevation mountain peak can bring unexpectedly cold temperatures. It's essential to dress in layers that you can easily add or remove as you move between different altitudes.

Will we be eating in or going out? Or both?

Consider where you’ll be eating and how you want to present yourself:

  • Staying In: If you plan to spend most of your time indoors, prioritize comfy clothes like pajamas, sweatpants, and cozy sweaters. However, it’s always good to have an extra set in case you decide to change.

  • Going Out: For dinners or nights out, pack a versatile outfit that can be dressed up or down. A nice pair of jeans paired with a stylish top or a casual dress can be perfect for various dining settings. 

2. Starting with a packing list

A packing list is your best friend when preparing for any trip, especially a short one where space is limited. Here’s how we recommend creating a packing list:

  • Versatile Clothing Essentials: Choose clothing items that can be mixed and matched easily. For example, a neutral-colored pair of shorts or pants can be paired with different tops to create multiple outfits. This strategy reduces the number of items you need to pack. And stick with a cohesive color scheme like browns, blacks, or blues. This not only makes it easier to mix and match outfits but also minimizes the need for multiple shoe options. For instance, if you choose black as your base color, you can pair it with white or grey tops for a chic and coordinated look.

**Pro Tip:** The weekend before your trip, set aside the clothes you want to bring while doing laundry. This ensures that you won’t accidentally wear them before your getaway and makes packing much easier. Place these items in a separate laundry basket or a designated stack so they’re easy to locate when it’s time to pack.

    • Travel-Sized Containers: Invest in travel-sized toiletries to save space in your bag. Refillable travel bottles are a great option and can be found on platforms like Amazon. They are lightweight and compliant with airline regulations if you’re flying. I opt for checking out the Target travel toiletry section and finding fun new shampoo’s to try out during a trip.

    • Essential Products: Don’t forget the basics like toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. Additionally, pack sunscreen and bug spray to protect yourself from the elements, especially if you’re spending time outdoors.

    • First Aid Supplies: A small first aid kit with bandaids, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, and any necessary prescription medications is crucial. I pack this on every trip I go on. I can easily fit it in my carry-on or personal bag.

    • Minimal Tech Essentials: While it’s tempting to bring all your gadgets, keeping tech to a minimum allows you to truly unwind. However, don’t forget essential items like your phone charger, a power bank for on-the-go charging, and headphones for entertainment during travel.

  • Entertainment: A Kindle or tablet can be great for reading or watching shows during downtime. If you’re traveling with kids, consider simple travel games, cards or get creative and come up with some campfire fun.

  • Travel Documents and Essentials

    • Identification and Wallet: Always double-check that you have your ID, driver’s license, and wallet. Consider using a travel wallet or organizer to keep these items secure and easily accessible.

    • Reservations and Itineraries: Ensure you have all your reservation information handy. This includes hotel bookings, rental car confirmations, and any tickets for activities or events. Creating a digital folder in your email with all these details or printing out copies can save time and reduce stress.

  • Snacks and Water Bottles: Staying fueled and hydrated is essential, especially when you’re out and about exploring your destination. Here’s how to incorporate snacks and hydration into your packing:

    • Energy-Boosting and Favorite Options: Pack snacks that provide quick energy and are easy to carry. Nuts, granola bars, dried fruit, and trail mix are excellent choices. But do not forget to pack some special favorite candies and quick treats! extra motivation sometimes on a trip can never hurt!

    • Reusable Water Bottles: A reusable water bottle is essential for staying hydrated, especially during outdoor activities. Look for bottles that are durable, lightweight, and easy to clean. Stainless steel or BPA-free plastic bottles are popular choices. And according to my 13 year old daughter, Stanleys are O-U-T and Owala is the new hot thing.

  • Packing Cubes: A game-changer for keeping your clothes organized and optimizing space. I never pack for a trip without them. They allow you to separate different types of clothing (e.g., tops, bottoms, underwear) into distinct sections, making it easier to find what you need without rummaging through your entire bag. They also make great gifts for the travelers in the family. There are many options in various colors and price ranges.

  • Roll to Save: Rolling your clothes instead of folding them can significantly reduce wrinkles and save space. Packing cubes help keep rolled clothes compact and prevent them from shifting during travel.

  • Use ALL the space: Fill shoes with smaller Items allows you to utilize every inch of space! Fill them with your socks, chargers, etc. 

4. Consider Special Destination Items

Depending on your destination, you may need to pack specific items to ensure your trip goes smoothly. Here’s a quick checklist for two popular weekend getaway types, along with some additional considerations for camping or cabin stays:

  • A Water Focused Weekend Away

    • Swimsuits and Rash Guards: Bring multiple suits to alternate between trips in the water. Rash guards provide additional sun protection and prevent skin irritation from saltwater or sand.

    • Beach Bag or Backpack Cooler: A spacious and waterproof beach bag or a backpack cooler is essential for carrying your essentials like towels, sunscreen, snacks, and drinks. Our backpack cooler might be the most used essential! We use it for road trips, sporting games, pool parties…

    • Beach Towels: Opt for lightweight, quick-drying towels that take up less space in your bag. Some microfiber towels are highly absorbent and dry rapidly, making them perfect for beach outings.

    • Sunglasses and Sunscreen: Protect your eyes and skin from the sun’s harmful rays. Polarized sunglasses reduce glare from the water, and a high-SPF sunscreen ensures you stay protected throughout the day.

    • Flip-Flops or Water Shoes: Comfortable and easy-to-wear footwear is a must for sandy beaches or rocky lake shores. Water shoes are particularly useful if you plan on engaging in water activities.

  • Camping or Cabin Weekend - If your weekend getaway involves camping or staying in a rustic cabin, you’ll need to pack additional gear to ensure comfort and safety and if this is your first trip here are some basic essentials: 

    • Sleeping Bags/Pads, Blankets and Pillows - and an air mattress if your really bougie: Ensure you have the right options to make sleeping as comfortable as possible (and check the weather too). 

    • Cooking Supplies: Bring lightweight cookware, utensils, and any non-perishable food items you plan to cook. Don’t forget a portable stove or grill if you’re cooking outdoors. And most importantly,do not forget a way to make coffee!

    • Lighting: A reliable flashlight or headlamp is essential for navigating your campsite after dark. Extra batteries are a must to avoid being left in the dark.

    • Camp/Folding Chairs: Comfortable seating can make your camping experience more enjoyable, whether you’re sitting around a campfire or relaxing in your cabin.

    • Power Station: if you are in a remote destination and going for more than a night, investing in a small power station is not a bad idea (it is also a great back-up if your electricity goes out at home!).

    • Fire Starters and Smore Kits: If you’re camping, bring reliable fire starters like waterproof matches or a lighter to help you get your campfire going.
